Yuksam

yippee!! :D

mountains!!

just got a phone call a minute ago from guy from NIE-YEP team - i've been selected to join an expedition project team to go up to Yuksam area of Sikkim (India) end of this year to help out in a community project!

Project Details:

Project Yuksam: The small village of Yuksam, Sikkim is the base where treks up the famous majestic Kanchenjunga begins. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Committee (KCC) is set up to look into ways to conserve this beautiful mountain and make sure that responsibilities, sustainable ecotourism is carried out.

Our project aims to work with KCC in the following way:

1) Public education and exchanges: We are exploring into possibilities of educational exchanges in the areas of sanitation, waste management and natural conservation.

2) KCC: We would like to help the committee come up with a more informative and comprehensive website in which it serves to act as a one-stop trekking service where trekking services e.g. hiring of guides, transportation, trekking packages can be obtained. Possibilities of aiding them in the setting up a Visitors' Centre is being looked into

3) Logistic support: We are looking to provide them with technological support the likes of cameras, computers etc to aid them in the documentation of plant life.

4) Traning and educational exchanges: Exchanges aimed at equipping local guides with more skills, e.g. First Aid and Risk Assessment Management (RAM) skills so that they can provide top quality and safe guide services.

Join us if you want to help the locals in Yuksam in their efforts to preserve the natural beauty of Kanchenjunga and in turn make ecotourism a livelihood they can depend on.
